Montego Bay's Best Art Gallery

Art lovers can’t help but drool over the pieces at the Gallery of West Indian Art, Mo’Bay’s 46-year-old trove of paintings, furniture, carvings and craft from all over the Caribbean. Owner Nicky Delisser and her partner Stefan make frequent trips to Cuba and Haiti for vibrant watercolors, acrylics and mixed media pieces, which are displayed in the Catherine Hall neighborhood store alongside works by emerging and established Jamaican artists.

But it’s the signature “spotties”  – a menagerie of wooden animals painted in vivid hues and stippled with tiny beads of white acrylic paint –  that everyone seems to love.

Display them as funky objets d’art; use them as bookends; give them as toys; or use them as doorstops. Priced from just $10 and ranging from palm-sized to five feet tall, no matter how many you already have, I’ve found you can always justify buying one more. And since the gallery sells online, you don’t even need a plane ticket to make a purchase.
